What Is the New York Paycheck Calculator?
The New York Paycheck Calculator is a payroll estimation tool that converts gross earnings into estimated net take-home pay. It uses the 2026 federal and New York tax values coded into the calculator. It also calculates Social Security, Medicare, New York State Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave, and supported local taxes.
You can enter gross pay for one pay period or calculate earnings from an hourly rate. Hourly mode includes regular hours, overtime at 1.5 times the hourly rate, and double-time at 2 times the rate. Bonus pay and several common deductions can also be included.
A New York paycheck calculator estimates how much of your gross pay may remain after payroll taxes and deductions. Enter your pay, frequency, withholding information, local jurisdiction, and deductions. The calculator applies its coded tax rules and displays gross pay, individual taxes, total taxes, deductions, and estimated net take-home pay.
How the New York Paycheck Calculator Formula Works
The calculation begins with gross earnings for the current pay period. In Salary / Gross Pay mode, the calculator uses the amount entered as Gross Pay. In Hourly mode, it calculates regular wages, overtime wages, and double-time wages.
In this formula, Gr is regular gross earnings, R is the hourly rate, Hr is regular hours, Ho is overtime hours, and Hd is double-time hours. Any bonus is then added to regular gross pay.
The calculator creates different taxable wage amounts for different taxes. Health, FSA, or Section 125 deductions reduce the amount subject to FICA and the coded New York SDI and PFL calculations. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions also reduce the amount used for federal, New York State, and supported local income-tax calculations.
Here, H is the Health / FSA / Sec. 125 deduction and K is the traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution. Federal and New York income taxes annualize the applicable period income using the selected pay frequency, apply the coded deductions and tax brackets, and divide the resulting annual tax back into one pay period.
For example, use the calculator’s default settings: $3,000 gross pay, biweekly frequency, Single federal filing status, Single New York filing status, one New York allowance, no bonus, no deductions, $0 YTD gross, and no local jurisdiction. Federal income tax is about $322.58. Social Security is $186.00, Medicare is $43.50, New York State income tax is about $138.21, SDI is $1.20, and PFL is $12.96.
The estimated total tax is about $704.44, giving net take-home pay of about $2,295.56. The calculator displays an effective tax rate of 23.5% for this example.
How to Use the New York Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step
- Choose Salary / Gross Pay or Hourly. Salary mode uses gross pay per period, while hourly mode uses your rate and hours worked.
- Select your Pay Frequency. The calculator supports weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, and annual pay periods.
- Enter your gross pay. In Hourly mode, enter your hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours.
- Enter YTD Gross Subject to FICA / PFL. This amount helps the calculator apply the Social Security and New York PFL limits coded into the tool.
- Add any Bonus / Supplemental Pay. Choose whether to combine it with regular wages or use the separate supplemental wage method.
- Complete the Federal Withholding (W-4) section. Select filing status and enter any applicable Step 2, Step 3, Step 4a, Step 4b, and Step 4c information.
- Complete the New York State Withholding (IT-2104) section. Select filing status, enter total allowances, and add extra New York withholding if applicable.
- Select your Local Jurisdiction. Options include none, New York City resident, Yonkers resident, Yonkers non-resident, or an Other / Manual Rate option.
- Enter any traditional 401(k) or 403(b), Health / FSA / Sec. 125, and post-tax deductions.
- Check the acknowledgement box and select Calculate Take-Home Pay.
The results show your gross pay, federal taxes, New York State and local taxes, payroll contributions, deductions, total taxes, total deductions, and estimated net take-home pay. Additional Medicare and local tax rows appear only when they apply to the entered values.
Factors That Affect Your New York Paycheck Calculator Result
Pay Frequency and Annualized Income
The selected pay frequency changes how current earnings are annualized for federal and New York income-tax calculations. A $3,000 biweekly paycheck is annualized using 26 pay periods. The same $3,000 entered as monthly pay is annualized using 12 periods. This can change the tax bracket used by the calculator.
Federal, New York, SDI, and PFL Rules
| Payroll Item | Rule Used in the Calculator |
|---|---|
| Social Security | 6.2% with a coded $184,500 wage base |
| Medicare | 1.45% of FICA-subject wages |
| Additional Medicare | 0.9% on coded wages crossing a $200,000 YTD threshold |
| NY SDI | 0.5%, capped at $0.60 per week or the equivalent per pay period |
| NY PFL | 0.432% with a coded $411.91 annual premium cap |
| NY IT-2104 Allowance | $1,000 annual exemption per allowance |
| Separate Federal Bonus Rate | 22% |
| Separate NY Bonus Rate | 11.7% |
The PFL calculation uses year-to-date gross to estimate how much contribution room remains. It derives that room from the coded annual PFL cap and PFL rate. The SDI calculation instead applies a maximum amount for each pay period based on the selected frequency.
New York City and Yonkers Taxes
Selecting New York City Resident adds a progressive NYC resident income-tax calculation using the New York filing status and allowance count. Under the separate bonus method, the calculator applies a coded 4.25% NYC supplemental rate to the bonus.
For a Yonkers resident, the calculator sets local tax to 16.75% of the calculated New York State tax. For a Yonkers non-resident, it calculates 0.50% of the current income-tax subject amount. The Other option applies the entered manual percentage directly to total gross pay.
Pre-Tax and Post-Tax Deductions
A Health / FSA / Sec. 125 deduction reduces both income-tax wages and FICA wages in the calculator. A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) reduces the amount used for income-tax calculations but remains part of FICA-subject wages. Post-tax deductions reduce take-home pay without reducing the calculator’s taxable wage amounts.
Important Limitations
This calculator provides an estimate and is not payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice. It follows only the 2026 rates, brackets, limits, and assumptions written into its code. Actual payroll withholding can differ because of tax-law changes, employer procedures, special compensation, benefits, credits, deductions, residency rules, and other personal circumstances.
Numeric inputs are treated as nonnegative values by the calculation logic, and total gross pay must be greater than zero. The calculator does not prevent deductions or extra withholding from exceeding gross pay. Unusual entries can therefore produce a very low or negative estimated net paycheck.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my take-home pay in New York?
Enter your salary or hourly earnings, choose your pay frequency, and complete the federal and New York withholding fields. Add local tax information and deductions where applicable. The calculator subtracts estimated federal, state, local, FICA, SDI, PFL, and deduction amounts from gross pay to estimate take-home pay.
Does the New York paycheck calculator include NYC tax?
Yes. Select New York City (NYC) Resident under Local Jurisdiction to include the calculator’s NYC resident tax calculation. It annualizes taxable income, subtracts the coded NYC standard deduction and IT-2104 exemptions, applies the selected filing-status brackets, and converts the annual calculation back to one pay period.
How does this calculator handle Yonkers taxes?
The calculator has separate options for Yonkers residents and non-residents. For residents, it calculates local tax as 16.75% of the New York State tax produced by the tool. For non-residents, it applies 0.50% to the paycheck amount subject to the calculator’s income-tax calculation.
How are bonuses calculated in the New York paycheck calculator?
Bonuses can be combined with regular wages or calculated separately. Under the separate method, the calculator applies 22% federal withholding and 11.7% New York withholding to the bonus. If NYC resident tax applies, it also uses a 4.25% NYC supplemental rate on the bonus amount.
Does a 401(k) reduce all paycheck taxes?
No. In this calculator, a traditional 401(k) or 403(b) reduces wages used for federal, New York State, and supported local income-tax calculations. It does not reduce wages used for Social Security or Medicare. The contribution itself is also included in total deductions when net pay is calculated.
Why does the calculator ask for year-to-date gross pay?
Year-to-date gross pay helps the calculator determine how much room remains under annual payroll limits. The code uses it for the $184,500 Social Security wage base, the $200,000 Additional Medicare threshold, and its New York Paid Family Leave contribution-cap calculation.
How accurate is the New York paycheck calculator?
The result is an estimate based on the information entered and the 2026 tax values coded into the calculator. It does not guarantee the amount shown on an actual pay stub. Employer payroll methods, changing tax rules, benefits, deductions, residency details, and other individual factors can change real withholding.
