What Is the Virginia Paycheck Calculator?
The Virginia Paycheck Calculator is a payroll estimation tool that converts gross earnings into estimated net take-home pay. It uses the 2026 federal and Virginia tax values programmed into the calculator. Users can calculate from gross pay per period or build gross earnings from an hourly rate and hours worked.
A Virginia paycheck calculator estimates how much money remains after federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Virginia withholding, deductions, and any local tax rate you enter. This tool supports regular wages, overtime, double time, supplemental pay, federal W-4 adjustments, Virginia VA-4 allowances, and several types of payroll deductions.
The result provides gross pay, each calculated tax, total taxes, total deductions, and net take-home pay. It also displays an effective tax rate. The figures are estimates based on the calculator’s programmed rules and the information you enter.
How the Virginia Paycheck Calculator Formula Works
The calculation begins by finding gross pay for the selected pay period. In Salary / Gross Pay mode, the calculator uses the amount entered as Gross Pay (Per Period). In Hourly mode, it calculates regular, overtime, and double-time earnings.
Hourly gross pay = (hourly rate × regular hours) + (hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours) + (hourly rate × 2 × double-time hours)
Total gross pay = regular gross pay + bonus or supplemental pay
Health, FSA, or Section 125 deductions reduce wages subject to both income tax and FICA in the calculator. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) deductions reduce the wage amount used for federal and Virginia income tax, but they do not reduce FICA wages.
FICA subject wages = max(0, total gross pay − health or Section 125 deduction)
Income-tax subject wages = max(0, total gross pay − health deduction − traditional 401(k) or 403(b) deduction)
Social Security equals 6.2% of eligible FICA wages until the coded 2026 wage base of $184,500 is reached. The entered YTD Gross Subject to FICA reduces the remaining wage-base room. Medicare equals 1.45% of FICA wages. An additional 0.9% applies to the portion that crosses the calculator’s $200,000 year-to-date threshold.
Federal and Virginia withholding are calculated by annualizing the applicable period wages using the selected pay frequency. Federal withholding then applies the programmed standard deduction, filing-status brackets, and W-4 adjustments. Virginia withholding subtracts the programmed standard deduction and $930 for each entered VA-4 allowance before applying the Virginia brackets.
Net take-home pay = total gross pay − total taxes − total deductions
Worked Virginia paycheck example
Suppose you enter $3,000 of biweekly gross pay. Use Single federal filing status, leave Step 2 unchecked, enter no federal adjustments, select Single / Head of Household for Virginia, claim one VA-4 allowance, and enter no bonus, deductions, local tax, or prior FICA wages.
The calculator annualizes $3,000 across 26 pay periods, giving $78,000. For federal tax, it subtracts the coded $16,100 standard deduction. Federal taxable income becomes $61,900. The programmed brackets produce $8,387 of annual federal tax, or about $322.58 for the paycheck.
Virginia taxable income is $78,000 − $8,750 standard deduction − $930 for one allowance, which equals $68,320. The programmed Virginia brackets produce $3,670.90 annually, or about $141.19 per paycheck. Social Security is $186.00 and Medicare is $43.50. Total estimated taxes are about $693.27, leaving estimated net take-home pay of $2,306.73.
How to Use the Virginia Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step
- Choose Salary / Gross Pay if you know your gross earnings for one pay period. Choose Hourly if you want the calculator to build gross pay from your rate and hours.
- Select your Pay Frequency. Available choices are weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, and annually.
- Enter your Gross Pay (Per Period). In Hourly mode, enter your Hourly Rate, Regular Hours, Overtime Hours, and Double-Time Hours instead.
- Enter YTD Gross Subject to FICA when applicable. Add any Bonus / Supplemental Pay and choose either the combined or separate supplemental wage method.
- Complete the federal W-4 fields. Choose your filing status and enter any Step 2 multiple-jobs selection, dependents, other income, deductions, or extra withholding.
- Complete the Virginia VA-4 fields. Choose your Virginia filing status, enter your total VA-4 allowances, and add any extra Virginia withholding.
- Enter a Local Tax Rate only if applicable. Then enter any traditional 401(k) or 403(b), Health / FSA / Section 125, and Post-Tax Deductions.
- Check the acknowledgment box to enable the calculation button, then select Calculate Take-Home Pay.
The results show your estimated gross pay, federal taxes, state and local taxes, applicable deductions, total taxes, total deductions, and net take-home pay. The effective tax rate shown in the explanation is total calculated taxes divided by gross pay.
What Your Virginia Paycheck Calculator Result Means
Your result depends on more than gross wages. Filing choices, deductions, supplemental wages, and year-to-date earnings can change the estimate. Understanding how each field is treated can help you enter information that better matches the paycheck you want to model.
| Calculator Item | How It Affects the Calculation |
|---|---|
| Traditional 401(k) / 403(b) | Reduces wages used for federal and Virginia income tax, but does not reduce FICA wages. |
| Health / FSA / Section 125 | Reduces wages used for federal income tax, Virginia income tax, Social Security, and Medicare. |
| Post-Tax Deductions | Do not reduce the calculator’s tax bases. They are included in total deductions and reduce net pay. |
| YTD Gross Subject to FICA | Helps determine remaining Social Security wage-base room and Additional Medicare withholding. |
| Bonus / Supplemental Pay | Can be combined with regular wages or handled with the calculator’s separate supplemental method. |
| Local Tax Rate | The entered percentage is applied directly to total gross pay. |
Combined versus separate bonus withholding
If you choose Combined with Regular Wages, the calculator adds the bonus to regular gross pay before calculating federal and Virginia income tax. If you select the separate method and enter a bonus, regular wages are calculated separately while the bonus receives a flat 22% federal calculation and a 5.75% Virginia calculation.
Year-to-date wages can change FICA
The YTD Gross Subject to FICA field is important for higher year-to-date earnings. Social Security withholding is limited by the programmed $184,500 wage base. The calculator also uses the same YTD figure to determine whether current FICA wages cross the $200,000 Additional Medicare threshold.
Know the calculator’s limits
The tool provides an estimate based on its coded 2026 values and your entries. Actual payroll results can differ because of employer payroll settings, taxable benefits, payroll rounding, deduction treatment, withholding rules, or circumstances not represented by the calculator. The calculator itself notes that Virginia prohibits local income taxes on employee paychecks, so the local tax field should only be used if applicable to your situation. Results are not payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is a Virginia paycheck calculator?
This Virginia paycheck calculator provides an estimate based on the 2026 tax values and formulas programmed into the tool. Its result depends on the information you enter. Actual payroll may differ because of employer-specific benefits, taxable compensation, payroll adjustments, deduction treatment, rounding, or other factors that the available calculator fields do not represent.
What taxes does the Virginia paycheck calculator include?
The calculator includes federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, possible Additional Medicare withholding, and Virginia state income tax. It also calculates a local tax if you enter a local tax percentage. These tax amounts are added together to produce the Total Taxes figure shown in the estimated paycheck results.
How does the calculator calculate overtime pay?
In Hourly mode, regular hours are multiplied by the entered hourly rate, overtime hours by 1.5 times that rate, and double-time hours by twice the rate. The calculator adds those amounts together as regular gross earnings. Any entered bonus or supplemental pay is then added to determine total gross pay.
Does a 401(k) lower paycheck taxes in this calculator?
A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution lowers the wage amount used for federal and Virginia income tax in this calculator. It does not lower wages used for Social Security or Medicare. The contribution is also included in Total Deductions, so it reduces the final net take-home pay shown by the tool.
How are bonuses taxed in the Virginia paycheck calculator?
Bonuses can be combined with regular wages or handled separately. Under the calculator’s separate supplemental method, it calculates federal withholding on the bonus at 22% and Virginia withholding at 5.75%. With the combined method, the bonus becomes part of the wage amount used by the regular federal and Virginia withholding calculations.
Why does year-to-date gross matter for my paycheck?
Year-to-date FICA gross affects Social Security and Additional Medicare calculations in this tool. It reduces the remaining amount available under the coded $184,500 Social Security wage base. It also helps determine whether the current paycheck crosses the calculator’s $200,000 threshold for the additional 0.9% Medicare withholding calculation.
What does effective tax rate mean on the calculator?
The effective tax rate is the calculator’s Total Taxes divided by Total Gross Pay, multiplied by 100. It reflects the federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare when applicable, Virginia income tax, and any entered local tax. Payroll deductions such as retirement, health, and post-tax deductions are not part of this percentage.
