What Is the North Dakota Paycheck Calculator?

The North Dakota Paycheck Calculator is a payroll estimation tool that converts gross earnings into estimated net take-home pay. It uses the 2026 federal and North Dakota tax values coded into the tool. It also calculates Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare when applicable, and an optional manually entered local tax.

The calculator can use gross pay entered for one pay period or calculate wages from an hourly rate. Hourly mode includes regular hours, overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate, and double-time at 2 times the rate. It also supports regular and separately taxed bonus pay.

A North Dakota paycheck calculator estimates how much of your gross earnings may remain after taxes and deductions. Enter your pay, frequency, W-4 information, North Dakota withholding settings, bonus pay, and deductions. The tool calculates each supported tax and displays estimated net take-home pay for the selected pay period.

How the North Dakota Paycheck Calculator Formula Works

The calculator first determines gross pay for the current period. In Salary / Gross Pay mode, it uses the entered Gross Pay amount. In Hourly mode, it adds regular wages, overtime wages, and double-time wages.

Gr=(R×Hr)+(1.5×R×Ho)+(2×R×Hd)G_r=(R\times H_r)+(1.5\times R\times H_o)+(2\times R\times H_d)

Here, Gr is regular gross earnings, R is the hourly rate, Hr is regular hours, Ho is overtime hours, and Hd is double-time hours. Bonus pay is then added.

G=Gr+BG=G_r+B

Health, FSA, or Section 125 deductions reduce the wages used for FICA. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions do not reduce FICA wages in the code. Both deduction types reduce the amount used for regular federal and North Dakota income-tax calculations.

SFICA=max(0,GH)S_{FICA}=\max(0,G-H)
SIncome=max(0,GHK)S_{Income}=\max(0,G-H-K)

For North Dakota withholding, the calculator annualizes SIncome using the selected pay frequency. For a 2020-or-later W-4, it applies the selected North Dakota bracket directly. For a pre-2020 W-4, it first subtracts $5,050 per entered allowance. Head of Household uses the Single table under the pre-2020 option.

T=Bt+(IO)×rT=B_t+(I-O)\times r

In the bracket formula, T is annual North Dakota tax, Bt is the coded base tax, I is annual taxable income, O is the applicable bracket threshold, and r is the bracket rate. The annual result is divided by the number of pay periods.

For example, use the default settings: $3,000 gross pay, biweekly frequency, Single federal status, a 2020-or-later W-4, Single North Dakota status, no bonus, no deductions, no extra withholding, $0 YTD gross, and a 0% local rate. Federal income tax is about $322.58. Social Security is $186.00, Medicare is $43.50, and North Dakota income tax is about $15.28.

Net Pay=$3,000.00$567.36=$2,432.64Net\ Pay=\$3,000.00-\$567.36=\$2,432.64

The calculator therefore displays about $2,432.64 in net take-home pay. Total estimated taxes are about $567.36, giving an effective tax rate of 18.9%.

How to Use the North Dakota Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Choose Salary / Gross Pay or Hourly. Salary mode accepts gross pay for one period, while hourly mode calculates earnings from your rate and hours.
  2. Select your Pay Frequency. Choices include weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  3. Enter your earnings. Hourly users can enter regular hours, overtime hours paid at 1.5x, and double-time hours paid at 2.0x.
  4. Enter YTD Gross Subject to FICA when applicable. The calculator uses it for the Social Security wage base and Additional Medicare threshold.
  5. Add any Bonus / Supplemental Pay. Choose whether it should be combined with regular wages or handled using the separate supplemental method.
  6. Complete the Federal Withholding (W-4) fields. These include filing status, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4a, Step 4b, and Step 4c.
  7. Select your North Dakota W-4 Form Year and ND Filing Status. If you choose 2019 or Earlier, the calculator also displays the Allowances field.
  8. Enter any Extra ND Withholding and optional manual Local Tax Rate.
  9. Add traditional 401(k) or 403(b), Health / FSA / Sec. 125, and post-tax deductions that apply to the paycheck.
  10. Check the acknowledgement box and select Calculate Take-Home Pay.

The results show gross pay, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, North Dakota income tax, applicable local tax, deductions, total taxes, total deductions, and estimated net take-home pay. Additional Medicare appears only when the entered wages cross its coded threshold.

Factors That Affect Your North Dakota Paycheck Calculator Result

North Dakota W-4 Form Year

The North Dakota calculation changes based on whether you select a W-4 from 2020 or later or one from 2019 or earlier. The post-2020 method does not use the North Dakota allowance field. The pre-2020 method subtracts $5,050 from annualized subject income for each allowance before applying the state bracket calculation.

For pre-2020 calculations, Married uses the married bracket table. Both Single and Head of Household use the pre-2020 Single table. Under the post-2020 option, Single, Married, and Head of Household each have their own coded bracket schedule.

North Dakota Income-Tax Brackets

Calculator ItemCoded Rule
Post-2020 Single0% through the coded $57,625 threshold, then 1.95% and 2.50% brackets
Post-2020 Married0% through the coded $57,500 threshold, then 1.95% and 2.50% brackets
Post-2020 Head of Household0% through the coded $78,475 threshold, then 1.95% and 2.50% brackets
Pre-2020 Allowance$5,050 annual reduction per entered allowance
Separate ND Bonus Rate1.50%
Separate Federal Bonus Rate22%

The state calculation uses annualized subject wages. This means pay frequency matters because a weekly, biweekly, or monthly paycheck is converted to a different annual amount before the bracket is selected.

Social Security and Medicare

The calculator applies Social Security at 6.2% to eligible FICA wages, with a coded wage base of $184,500. It applies Medicare at 1.45% without that wage-base cap. It also applies a 0.9% Additional Medicare calculation to the portion of current wages that crosses the coded $200,000 year-to-date threshold.

Bonus Withholding Method

The Combined method includes bonus pay with the normal income subject amount. Under the Separate method, regular wages are calculated separately. The bonus receives a 22% federal supplemental withholding calculation and a 1.50% North Dakota supplemental calculation. FICA calculations still use applicable total gross wages, including the bonus.

Federal W-4 Adjustments

The federal calculation uses the W-4 fields separately from the North Dakota calculation. Step 2 halves the coded federal standard deduction, bracket thresholds, and bracket base-tax values. Step 3 reduces annual federal tax. Step 4a adds other income, Step 4b subtracts deductions, and Step 4c adds extra federal withholding per paycheck.

Pre-Tax and Post-Tax Deductions

Health, FSA, or Section 125 deductions reduce the wages used for federal income tax, North Dakota income tax, Social Security, and Medicare. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions reduce the federal and North Dakota income-tax subject amount but remain subject to FICA. Post-tax deductions reduce net pay without reducing taxable wages.

Local Tax Is a Manual Percentage

The calculator includes a Local Tax Rate field that defaults to 0%. If you enter a percentage, the code multiplies that percentage by total gross pay. It does not select or apply a city-specific or county-specific local tax table, so this field functions only as a manual rate calculation.

Important Limits and Assumptions

This calculator provides an estimate and is not payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice. It follows only the 2026 rates, thresholds, brackets, and calculation rules written into the code. Actual payroll may differ because of tax-law changes, employer procedures, benefit treatment, special compensation, deductions, credits, or personal tax circumstances.

Numeric inputs are converted to nonnegative values by the calculation logic. Total gross pay must be greater than $0 before a result is produced. The calculator does not prevent deductions or extra withholding from exceeding gross pay, so unusual inputs can produce a very small or negative net paycheck estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my take-home pay in North Dakota?

Enter your gross pay or hourly earnings, choose a pay frequency, complete your federal W-4 information, and select the North Dakota W-4 year and filing status. Add bonuses and deductions where applicable. The calculator subtracts supported taxes and deductions from gross pay to estimate your net paycheck.

What taxes does the North Dakota paycheck calculator include?

The calculator includes federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare when its coded threshold is crossed, and North Dakota income tax. It can also apply a manually entered local tax percentage. The results separate these amounts before displaying total taxes and net take-home pay.

How does North Dakota withholding work for a 2020 or later W-4?

The calculator annualizes the paycheck’s income-tax subject amount and applies the post-2020 North Dakota bracket for your selected filing status. It does not use the North Dakota allowance field under this option. Single, Married, and Head of Household each have a separate bracket table in the code.

What is the difference between pre-2020 and post-2020 W-4 calculations?

The main coded difference is the allowance treatment and filing-status tables. Pre-2020 calculations subtract $5,050 per allowance before applying the North Dakota bracket. Head of Household uses the Single table under that method. Post-2020 calculations do not subtract allowances and include a separate Head of Household table.

How does the calculator handle a bonus in North Dakota?

You can combine a bonus with regular wages or choose the Separate supplemental method. Under the Separate option, the calculator applies 22% federal withholding and 1.50% North Dakota withholding to the bonus. Regular wages are calculated separately using the normal federal and state withholding methods.

Does a 401(k) reduce all paycheck taxes?

No. A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution reduces the amount used for federal and North Dakota income-tax calculations. It does not reduce the calculator’s Social Security or Medicare wages. The contribution is also included in total deductions when the tool calculates estimated net take-home pay.

How accurate is the North Dakota paycheck calculator?

The calculator gives an estimate based on the 2026 values and formulas coded into the tool and the information you enter. It does not guarantee an actual payroll result. Employer payroll systems, tax changes, benefit rules, special deductions, and individual circumstances can cause your real paycheck to differ.
