What Is a Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator?
A Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator estimates how much of a paycheck remains after the taxes and deductions included in the tool. This calculator starts with per-period gross pay or hourly earnings, adds any bonus, applies its coded federal, FICA, Pennsylvania, and user-entered local taxes, subtracts deductions, and displays estimated net take-home pay.
The tool is useful for Pennsylvania employees checking a new wage, comparing salary and hourly pay, estimating a bonus paycheck, or reviewing withholding choices. Its result is a per-pay-period estimate, not an annual tax return calculation. The pay-frequency setting is especially important because the calculator annualizes federal wages using weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, or annual frequency.
How the Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator Formula Works
Salary mode uses gross pay for one period. Hourly mode calculates regular, overtime, and double-time earnings:
R is the hourly rate. Hr, Ho, and Hd are regular, overtime, and double-time hours. Bonus pay is then added:
Health/FSA/Section 125 deductions reduce the FICA, federal, Pennsylvania, and local EIT wage bases. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions reduce only the federal income-tax wage base.
Social Security is 6.2% of FICA-subject wages, which equal total gross minus the health deduction, limited by remaining room under the $184,500 coded wage base. Medicare is 1.45%. The calculator adds 0.9% Additional Medicare on qualifying current wages after YTD gross plus current FICA-subject wages exceeds $200,000.
Federal withholding annualizes federal-subject wages by pay frequency, adjusts for the entered W-4 amounts and coded standard deduction, applies filing-status brackets, subtracts the Step 3 dependent amount, and divides by frequency. Step 2 halves the standard deduction, bracket thresholds, and bracket bases. Extra federal withholding is added per period.
Pennsylvania tax is 3.07% of total gross minus the health deduction, plus extra PA withholding. PA employee UI/SUTA is 0.07% of that base. Local EIT uses the entered percentage, and LST uses the entered flat amount.
Worked example: With $3,000 biweekly gross pay, Single status, $0 YTD gross, and no bonus, deductions, extra withholding, or local taxes, federal wages annualize to $78,000. After the coded $16,100 standard deduction, taxable income is $61,900. Federal withholding is $322.58. Social Security is $186.00, Medicare $43.50, Pennsylvania tax $92.10, and PA UI/SUTA $2.10. Total taxes are $646.28, leaving estimated net pay of $2,353.72 and a displayed 21.5% effective tax rate.
Negative, blank, or non-numeric inputs resolve to zero. Calculation stops when total gross is zero, but large deductions can still produce negative net pay.
How to Use the Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step
- Choose Salary / Gross Pay or Hourly. Salary mode expects gross pay for one pay period, not annual salary.
- Select your Pay Frequency: weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
- Enter gross pay for the period. In hourly mode, enter the hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours.
- Enter any YTD Gross Subject to FICA, choose the supplemental wage method, and add bonus or supplemental pay if applicable.
- Complete the federal W-4 fields: filing status, Step 2 multiple jobs, Step 3 dependents, Step 4a other income, Step 4b deductions, and Step 4c extra withholding.
- Add any extra Pennsylvania withholding. Then enter your local EIT percentage and per-period LST amount if they apply to your paycheck.
- Enter traditional 401(k) or 403(b), health/FSA/Section 125, and post-tax deductions for the current pay period.
- Check the acknowledgment box to enable the calculation button, then select Calculate Take-Home Pay.
The results show gross pay, applicable deduction lines, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Pennsylvania state tax, PA employee UI/SUTA, any entered local taxes, total taxes, total deductions, and net take-home pay. Additional Medicare appears only when triggered. Local EIT, LST, and post-tax lines appear only when their values are greater than zero.
What Your Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator Result Means
How the calculator treats deductions
| Pay item | Federal income tax base | FICA base | PA and local EIT base | Net pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional 401(k) / 403(b) | Reduces it | Does not reduce it | Does not reduce it | Subtracted as a deduction |
| Health / FSA / Section 125 | Reduces it | Reduces it | Reduces it | Subtracted as a deduction |
| Post-tax deductions | Does not reduce it | Does not reduce it | Does not reduce it | Subtracted after taxes |
How bonuses are handled
The supplemental wage setting changes federal bonus treatment. With Combined with Regular Wages, the bonus is included with current gross pay before federal annualization. With Separate, the regular portion uses the federal withholding method and the bonus receives a flat 22% federal rate. For Pennsylvania, combined mode uses total gross minus the health deduction as one wage base. Separate mode taxes regular wages after that deduction and applies 3.07% directly to the bonus.
What can change the estimate
Pay frequency, federal filing status, Step 2, W-4 dollar entries, YTD FICA wages, bonus method, local tax inputs, and deductions can all change the result. YTD gross matters because it controls the remaining Social Security wage-base room and whether the additional Medicare threshold is crossed. Local taxes are not looked up automatically, so the calculator uses the EIT rate and LST amount you enter.
This is an estimate based on the rules and 2026 values hard-coded into the calculator. It is not payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice. Actual withholding can differ because of payroll-system rules, taxable benefits, local requirements, year-to-date details, corrections, or personal tax circumstances that are not represented by these inputs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a Pennsylvania paycheck calculator calculate take-home pay?
It subtracts the taxes and deductions coded into the tool from total gross pay. This calculator can include federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, additional Medicare, Pennsylvania income tax, PA employee UI/SUTA, user-entered local EIT and LST, retirement contributions, health deductions, and post-tax deductions.
What Pennsylvania tax rate does this calculator use?
The calculator uses a 3.07% Pennsylvania state income-tax rate on gross pay minus the entered health/FSA/Section 125 deduction. It also calculates a 0.07% PA employee UI/SUTA amount on the same wage base. Any extra Pennsylvania withholding entered by the user is added to the state tax result.
Does a traditional 401(k) reduce Pennsylvania taxable wages?
Not in this calculator. Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions reduce the wage base used for federal income-tax withholding, but they do not reduce the calculator’s Pennsylvania income-tax, local EIT, Social Security, or Medicare wage bases. The contribution is also included in total deductions when net pay is calculated.
How does the calculator handle bonus or supplemental pay?
You can combine the bonus with regular wages or select the separate method. In separate mode, the calculator applies 22% federal withholding to the bonus and 3.07% Pennsylvania tax to the bonus. Regular wages still go through the calculator’s federal withholding method, and extra federal withholding is added afterward.
Does the Pennsylvania paycheck calculator include local taxes?
Yes, but the local amounts depend on what you enter. The calculator accepts a Local Earned Income Tax rate as a percentage and a Local Services Tax amount per pay period. It does not select a municipality or automatically look up a local rate, so those fields must match your situation.
How does YTD gross affect Social Security and Medicare?
YTD gross is used to measure current wages against two coded thresholds. Social Security withholding is limited by the remaining room under the $184,500 wage base. The calculator also checks whether YTD gross plus current FICA-subject wages exceeds $200,000 and applies 0.9% additional Medicare tax to the qualifying amount.
How accurate is this Pennsylvania paycheck calculator?
The result is an estimate that follows the calculator’s hard-coded 2026 rates, brackets, thresholds, and input logic. Accuracy depends on entering the same pay, W-4 information, local taxes, YTD FICA wages, and deductions used by your payroll. Actual withholding may differ when your payroll includes rules or items this tool does not model.
