Estimated Paycheck

What Is a South Dakota Paycheck Calculator?

A South Dakota Paycheck Calculator estimates how much of your gross paycheck remains after the taxes and deductions included in the tool. This calculator starts with earnings for one pay period, adds any bonus, calculates federal income tax and FICA, applies any entered local tax, subtracts paycheck deductions, and shows estimated net take-home pay.

The calculator is designed for South Dakota employees who want a quick paycheck estimate before comparing it with an actual pay stub. It can model weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, or annual pay. Unlike calculators for states with wage income taxes, this tool sets South Dakota state personal income tax on earned wages to $0. The final result remains an estimate based on the information entered and the 2026 rules coded into the calculator.

How the South Dakota Paycheck Calculator Works

The calculation begins with gross earnings for the current pay period. Salary mode uses the entered gross pay directly. Hourly mode calculates regular wages, overtime at 1.5 times the hourly rate, and double-time earnings at twice the hourly rate.

Regular Gross=(R×Hr)+(1.5R×Ho)+(2R×Hd)\text{Regular Gross}=(R\times H_r)+(1.5R\times H_o)+(2R\times H_d)

R is the hourly rate. Hr is regular hours, Ho is overtime hours, and Hd is double-time hours. Bonus pay is added next:

Total Gross=Regular Gross+Bonus\text{Total Gross}=\text{Regular Gross}+\text{Bonus}

Health, FSA, and Section 125 deductions reduce both federal income-tax wages and FICA wages. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions reduce federal income-tax wages but remain subject to FICA. Post-tax deductions do not reduce either tax base.

Social Security is 6.2% of eligible FICA wages, limited by remaining room under the coded $184,500 wage base. Medicare is 1.45%. The code adds 0.9% Additional Medicare tax to qualifying current wages when YTD gross plus current FICA-subject wages exceeds $200,000.

Federal withholding annualizes federal-subject wages using the selected pay frequency. It applies the entered W-4 filing status, Step 2 setting, Step 3 dependent amount, Step 4a other income, Step 4b deductions, and Step 4c extra withholding. South Dakota state income tax is always $0 in the calculation. An entered local rate is multiplied by total gross pay.

Net Pay=Total GrossTotal TaxesTotal Deductions\text{Net Pay}=\text{Total Gross}-\text{Total Taxes}-\text{Total Deductions}

Worked example: Assume $3,000 biweekly gross pay, Single filing status, $0 YTD gross, and no bonus, deductions, extra withholding, or local tax. Federal wages annualize to $78,000. After the coded $16,100 standard deduction, taxable income is $61,900. Federal withholding is $322.58. Social Security is $186.00 and Medicare is $43.50. South Dakota state tax is $0.00. Total taxes are $552.08, leaving estimated net pay of $2,447.92. The calculator displays an effective tax rate of 18.4%.

How to Use the South Dakota Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Choose Salary / Gross Pay or Hourly. Salary mode asks for gross pay for one pay period, not annual salary.
  2. Select your Pay Frequency. The calculator supports weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, and annual pay.
  3. Enter your earnings. Salary mode uses Gross Pay (Per Period). Hourly mode asks for hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours.
  4. Enter YTD Gross Subject to FICA. The calculator uses this amount when checking the Social Security wage base and Additional Medicare threshold.
  5. Choose the Supplemental Wage Method and enter any Bonus / Supplemental Pay. The options are combined with regular wages or separate federal withholding at 22%.
  6. Complete the federal W-4 fields that apply to you. These include filing status, Step 2 multiple jobs, Step 3 dependents, Step 4a other income, Step 4b deductions, and Step 4c extra withholding.
  7. Enter a Local Tax Rate only if you want the calculator to apply one. The field accepts a percentage.
  8. Add any traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution, Health/FSA/Section 125 deduction, and post-tax deductions for the current period.
  9. Check the acknowledgment box and select Calculate Take-Home Pay. The calculation button remains disabled until the acknowledgment is selected.

The results show gross pay, applicable deduction lines, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, South Dakota state tax, any calculated local tax, total taxes, total deductions, and net take-home pay. Additional Medicare appears only when triggered. The estimate summary also shows the effective tax rate for the paycheck.

What Your South Dakota Paycheck Calculator Result Means

South Dakota state income tax is $0 in the calculator

The code does not calculate a South Dakota personal income tax on earned wages. The results always display South Dakota State Tax: $0.00. The calculator also does not subtract an employee-paid South Dakota disability or paid family leave contribution. Its explanation notes that employer unemployment taxes are employer-paid and are not deducted from employee paychecks.

Pre-tax deductions do not all work the same way

Paycheck itemFederal income-tax baseSocial Security and Medicare baseFinal net pay
Traditional 401(k) / 403(b)Reduces itDoes not reduce itSubtracted as a deduction
Health / FSA / Section 125Reduces itReduces itSubtracted as a deduction
Post-tax deductionsDoes not reduce itDoes not reduce itSubtracted as a deduction

This difference matters when comparing two deduction amounts. A traditional retirement contribution lowers the federal wage base used by this tool but does not lower FICA wages. A qualifying health deduction lowers both. The optional local tax calculation is separate because it uses total gross pay without subtracting these deductions.

Bonus withholding depends on the method you choose

With Combined with Regular Wages, the bonus becomes part of total gross before federal withholding is calculated. With Separate, regular federal withholding is calculated on the regular wage portion and the entire bonus receives a 22% federal supplemental rate. Step 4c extra federal withholding is then added to the result.

Year-to-date wages can change FICA

The YTD Gross Subject to FICA field affects Social Security and Additional Medicare. The calculator limits current Social Security-taxable wages to the remaining amount below its $184,500 wage base. It also checks whether YTD gross plus current FICA-subject wages passes $200,000 when determining Additional Medicare tax.

Some unusual inputs can produce unusual results

The code converts negative, blank, or invalid numeric values to zero. It will not calculate if total gross pay is $0 or less. However, deductions, extra withholding, and the optional local tax are not capped at gross pay. Large entries can therefore produce a negative estimated net paycheck.

The Local Tax Rate field deserves special attention. The calculator’s own help text says South Dakota prohibits local income taxes on employee paychecks and instructs users to enter a percentage only if a special exception applies. The calculator does not identify a locality or look up a rate. It simply applies the percentage entered to total gross pay.

This tool provides an estimate based on its coded 2026 tax settings and the information you enter. Actual payroll may differ because of taxable benefits, payroll adjustments, employer systems, tax-law changes, personal circumstances, or other items not modeled here. The result is not payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a South Dakota paycheck calculator calculate take-home pay?

A South Dakota paycheck calculator estimates take-home pay by subtracting calculated taxes and entered deductions from gross earnings. This tool includes federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare when applicable, an optional user-entered local tax, traditional retirement contributions, qualifying health deductions, and post-tax deductions. South Dakota state income tax is set to $0.

Does South Dakota have state income tax in this calculator?

No. The calculator sets South Dakota state personal income tax on earned wages to $0 and displays a $0.00 state tax line in the results. It also does not calculate an employee-paid state disability or paid family leave tax. Federal withholding and FICA can still reduce the estimated paycheck.

Does a 401(k) reduce taxes in this South Dakota paycheck calculator?

A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) reduces the federal income-tax wage base used by this calculator. It does not reduce wages subject to Social Security or Medicare. The contribution is also included in total deductions, so it reduces the final net take-home amount even though the FICA calculation still includes those wages.

How does the South Dakota paycheck calculator handle bonus pay?

The calculator offers two bonus methods. Combined mode includes bonus pay with regular wages before calculating federal withholding. Separate mode calculates federal withholding on the regular wage portion and applies a flat 22% federal rate to the bonus. Bonus pay is also included in total gross for FICA and any entered local tax.

How does YTD gross affect my South Dakota paycheck estimate?

YTD gross affects the Social Security and Additional Medicare calculations. The code uses it to determine how much room remains under the $184,500 Social Security wage base. It also combines YTD gross with current FICA-subject wages to determine whether any current wages exceed the calculator’s $200,000 Additional Medicare threshold.

What is the difference between salary and hourly mode?

Salary mode uses the gross pay entered for one pay period. Hourly mode builds gross pay from the hourly rate and hours entered. It calculates regular hours at the standard rate, overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate, and double-time hours at twice the rate. Either mode can include bonus pay.

Does this South Dakota paycheck calculator include local taxes?

The calculator includes an optional Local Tax Rate field. If a percentage above zero is entered, the code multiplies total gross pay by that rate and includes the result in total taxes. It does not automatically identify a locality or rate, and its help text says the field should be used only for a special exception.

How accurate is this South Dakota paycheck calculator?

The calculator provides an estimate based on the 2026 values and formulas coded into the tool. Accuracy depends on entering pay, W-4 information, YTD wages, deductions, bonus details, and any other applicable values correctly. An employer’s actual payroll may differ if it includes rules, benefits, adjustments, or withholding details not represented here.
