What Is the Mississippi Paycheck Calculator?
The Mississippi Paycheck Calculator is a payroll estimation tool that converts gross earnings into estimated net take-home pay. It calculates regular wages, bonus pay, federal income tax, Mississippi income tax, Social Security, Medicare, optional local tax, and entered deductions.
To estimate a Mississippi paycheck, enter your gross pay or hourly earnings, choose a pay frequency, and provide your federal and state withholding details. The calculator annualizes eligible wages, applies its coded 2026 tax settings, subtracts taxes and deductions, and displays the estimated amount remaining for the pay period.
The tool can help employees compare salary and hourly earnings, estimate the effect of a bonus, review withholding choices, or understand why take-home pay is lower than gross pay. Its result is a per-pay-period estimate rather than a tax return calculation or official payroll statement.
How the Mississippi Paycheck Calculator Works
The calculator first determines regular gross pay. In salary mode, it uses the gross pay entered for one pay period. In hourly mode, it adds regular wages, overtime paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate, and double-time wages paid at twice the rate.
In this formula, r is the hourly rate, hr is regular hours, ho is overtime hours, and hd is double-time hours. Any bonus is then added to regular gross pay.
Health, FSA, and Section 125 deductions reduce wages subject to income tax and FICA. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) deductions reduce wages used for federal and Mississippi income tax, but they do not reduce FICA wages.
Social Security is 6.2% of eligible wages, limited by the coded $184,500 wage base. Medicare is 1.45% of FICA wages. An additional 0.9% Medicare amount applies to wages crossing the coded $200,000 year-to-date threshold.
Federal taxable wages are annualized using the selected pay frequency. The calculator adds W-4 Step 4a other income, subtracts Step 4b deductions and the coded standard deduction, applies the filing-status tax brackets, subtracts the Step 3 dependent amount, and converts the annual tax back to one pay period. Step 4c withholding is then added.
For Mississippi withholding, P is the period income-tax subject amount, f is annual pay periods, DMS is the state standard deduction, and EMS is the exemption amount. The coded state rate is 4% after the deductions, exemptions, and $10,000 zero-rate amount.
Worked Example
Assume a single employee earns $3,000 biweekly, has no bonus or deductions, claims a $6,000 Mississippi exemption, and has no year-to-date wages. The annualized pay is $78,000. The calculator produces about $322.58 in federal income tax, $186 in Social Security, $43.50 in Medicare, and $91.85 in Mississippi tax.
Because the calculator performs the calculation before currency formatting, its displayed net result is $2,356.08 after internal values are combined and formatted as U.S. dollars.
How to Use the Mississippi Paycheck Calculator: Step by Step
- Select Salary / Gross Pay or Hourly. Salary mode accepts gross pay for one period. Hourly mode calculates pay from your rate and hours.
- Choose your pay frequency: weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
- Enter gross pay. For hourly earnings, provide the hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours.
- Enter year-to-date gross wages subject to FICA. Add bonus or supplemental pay and choose whether it is combined with regular wages or taxed separately.
- Complete the federal W-4 fields. Choose a filing status and enter applicable Step 2, Step 3, Step 4a, Step 4b, and Step 4c information.
- Select your Mississippi filing status. Enter the total exemption claimed on Form 89-350 and any extra Mississippi withholding.
- Enter a local tax rate only when applicable. The field defaults to zero.
- Add traditional retirement contributions, health or Section 125 deductions, and post-tax deductions for the current pay period.
- Check the acknowledgement box, then select Calculate Take-Home Pay.
The result shows gross pay, each calculated tax, entered deductions, total taxes, total deductions, and net take-home pay. Optional rows appear only when they apply, such as Additional Medicare tax, local tax, or post-tax deductions. The explanation also displays the estimated effective tax rate.
Factors That Affect Your Mississippi Paycheck Estimate
Pay Frequency and Annualization
The calculator annualizes period wages before estimating federal and Mississippi income tax. A $3,000 biweekly paycheck is treated as $78,000 of annual pay because biweekly frequency uses 26 periods. Changing the frequency without changing the entered period amount can produce a very different estimate.
How Deductions Are Treated
| Deduction | Federal and Mississippi Income Tax | FICA Taxes | Net Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) | Reduces taxable wages | Does not reduce taxable wages | Subtracted from pay |
| Health, FSA, or Section 125 | Reduces taxable wages | Reduces taxable wages | Subtracted from pay |
| Post-tax deductions | No reduction | No reduction | Subtracted after taxes |
Bonus Withholding Method
Under the combined method, the bonus is added to regular wages before income taxes are calculated. Under the separate method, regular wages use the normal withholding calculation, while the bonus is taxed at the calculator’s coded 22% federal supplemental rate and 4% Mississippi supplemental rate.
Year-to-Date FICA Wages
Year-to-date wages affect Social Security and Additional Medicare calculations. Social Security withholding stops after the coded $184,500 wage base is reached. Additional Medicare withholding begins on the portion of eligible wages that pushes the entered year-to-date total above $200,000.
Important Limitations
This calculator uses fixed 2026 settings written into its code. It does not calculate employer payroll taxes, tax refunds, tax credits beyond the entered W-4 dependent amount, itemized state deductions, payroll benefit limits, or a complete annual tax return. Actual pay may vary because of payroll timing, employer systems, taxable benefits, garnishments, updated laws, or other circumstances.
The output is an estimate and is not payroll, tax, legal, financial, or accounting advice. Review your pay stub and official forms, and consult a qualified professional when making decisions based on withholding or tax liability.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my take-home pay in Mississippi?
Enter your gross pay or hourly earnings, select your pay frequency, and provide your federal and Mississippi withholding details. The calculator subtracts estimated federal income tax, Mississippi income tax, Social Security, Medicare, optional local tax, and entered deductions from gross pay to estimate net take-home pay.
Does the Mississippi paycheck calculator include overtime?
Yes. Hourly mode includes separate fields for regular hours, overtime hours, and double-time hours. The code pays overtime at 1.5 times the entered hourly rate and double time at twice the rate. These earnings are added together before bonuses, taxes, and deductions are calculated.
How does the calculator handle bonus pay?
The calculator offers two bonus methods. The combined method adds the bonus to regular wages before calculating withholding. The separate method calculates regular wage withholding normally, then applies a flat 22% federal rate and a flat 4% Mississippi rate to the bonus entered for that pay period.
Does a 401(k) contribution reduce all payroll taxes?
No. In this calculator, a traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution reduces wages used for federal and Mississippi income tax. It does not reduce wages subject to Social Security or Medicare. The contribution is also included in total deductions and subtracted when the calculator determines net pay.
Why does the calculator ask for year-to-date gross pay?
Year-to-date gross pay helps determine whether the paycheck reaches certain FICA thresholds. The calculator limits Social Security wages using a $184,500 annual wage base. It also checks whether eligible wages cross the $200,000 threshold used for the additional 0.9% Medicare withholding calculation.
What Mississippi filing statuses are available?
The calculator includes single, married with both spouses working, head of family, and married with one spouse working. These choices set a coded Mississippi standard deduction of $2,300, $2,300, $3,400, or $4,600. The separate exemption field is then subtracted from annualized taxable wages.
How accurate is this Mississippi paycheck calculator?
The calculator provides an estimate based on its entered values and hardcoded 2026 tax settings. Accuracy depends on correct pay, filing status, W-4 information, Mississippi exemptions, year-to-date wages, and deductions. Actual payroll may differ because of employer rules, taxable benefits, rounding, legal changes, or information not included in the tool.
