How the Power Finesse Ratio Formula Works
The calculator first determines the pitcher’s true total innings pitched. Baseball notation such as 162.1 does not mean 162.1 decimal innings. The “.1” represents one additional out, while “.2” represents two additional outs. The code therefore stores full innings and additional outs separately.
Here, IP is the decimal innings value used by the calculation. IPfull is the number of completed innings, and Outs is 0, 1, or 2 additional outs.
The calculator then adds strikeouts and walks and divides that sum by total innings pitched:
K represents strikeouts, BB represents walks, and IP represents total innings pitched after the additional outs are converted to thirds of an inning.

Finesse pitcher profile
A PFR below 1.0 triggers the calculator’s contact-oriented finesse label. This means the combined number of strikeouts and walks is less than one per inning pitched. The label is based solely on the PFR threshold. The calculator does not examine hits, home runs, batted-ball data, velocity, or other pitching statistics.
Balanced pitcher profile
A PFR from 1.0 through 1.35 is labeled Balanced Pitcher (League Average Range) by the code. The lower boundary is inclusive because a PFR of exactly 1.0 falls into this category. A result of exactly 1.35 also remains in the balanced category.
Power pitcher profile
A PFR above 1.35 receives the Power Pitcher label. In the calculator’s wording, this indicates high reliance on strikeouts and walks relative to innings pitched. It does not mean the pitcher is better or worse. The formula measures frequency of those two outcomes, not overall pitching quality.
The calculator has important limits. It uses only strikeouts, walks, and innings pitched. It does not include hits, runs, earned runs, home runs, hit batters, strikeout-to-walk ratio, ERA, WHIP, FIP, or defensive performance.
