For the cleanest baseball conversion, use Total Outs Recorded when you know the exact number of outs. The manual Innings Pitched field is treated by the code as an ordinary decimal number. For example, an entry of 45.2 is used as 45.2, not automatically converted into the baseball notation of 45 innings and two outs.

How to Use the Baseball ERA Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Enter the pitcher’s Earned Runs (ER). Use only runs classified as earned.
  2. Enter Total Outs Recorded when you know the exact number of outs. The calculator divides this number by three if Innings Pitched is left blank.

Use the correct run total

ERA uses earned runs, not all runs allowed. An unearned run should not be included in the Earned Runs field. The calculator does not decide whether a run was earned. It uses the number entered by the user.

Consider the number of innings

A small sample can produce an extreme ERA. One earned run in a short appearance can cause a large result, while several scoreless innings can quickly lower it. More innings usually provide a more stable view of a pitcher’s run prevention.
