What Is the Virginia Salary Calculator?

The Virginia Salary Calculator is a paycheck estimation tool that converts an annual gross salary into estimated net pay for a selected pay period. It applies the 2025 federal and Virginia withholding rules coded into the tool, along with Social Security and Medicare taxes. It can also account for several common payroll deductions and supplemental wages.

A Virginia salary calculator estimates how much of your gross salary may reach your paycheck after taxes and deductions. Enter your annual salary, pay schedule, tax settings, deductions, and any supplemental pay. The calculator then shows estimated net pay, taxable wages, individual taxes, total deductions, and projected monthly and annual take-home pay.

The results are estimates rather than a payroll statement or tax return. Actual withholding can differ because of employer payroll methods, wage records, permitted alternative calculation methods, and information not represented by the calculator.

How the Virginia Salary Calculator Formula Works

The calculation starts by dividing annual salary by the number of pay periods. The code uses 52 periods for weekly pay, 26 for biweekly pay, 24 for semimonthly pay, and 12 for monthly pay.

Regular Gross Pay=Annual SalaryPay Periods per Year\text{Regular Gross Pay}=\frac{\text{Annual Salary}}{\text{Pay Periods per Year}}

Federal taxable wages are reduced by qualifying pre-tax deductions. The calculator annualizes those wages, subtracts the 2025 federal standard deduction for the selected filing status, applies W-4 adjustments, and calculates tax through progressive federal brackets. Step 3 dependent credits reduce annual federal tax, while Step 4(c) is added as extra withholding per paycheck.

Federal Annual Taxable=max(0,(Period Taxable×P)Standard Deduction+W-4 Adjustments)\text{Federal Annual Taxable}=\max(0,(\text{Period Taxable}\times P)-\text{Standard Deduction}+\text{W-4 Adjustments})

Virginia withholding annualizes Virginia taxable wages, then subtracts an $8,750 standard deduction, $930 for each personal or dependent exemption, and $800 for each age or blindness exemption. The remaining amount is taxed using the coded Virginia brackets from 2% through 5.75%.

VA Annual Taxable=max(0,(VA Period Taxable×P)8750930E800A)\text{VA Annual Taxable}=\max(0,(\text{VA Period Taxable}\times P)-8750-930E-800A)

Social Security is 6.2% of eligible wages remaining below the $176,100 coded wage base. Medicare is 1.45% of Medicare-taxable wages. The calculator also applies 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding when prior year-to-date and current Medicare wages cross $200,000.

Net Pay=max(0,Total GrossTotal TaxesTotal Deductions)\text{Net Pay}=\max(0,\text{Total Gross}-\text{Total Taxes}-\text{Total Deductions})

Worked Example

Suppose annual salary is $78,000, pay is biweekly, federal status is married filing jointly, Virginia exemptions equal 1, and all other optional fields are zero. Regular gross pay is $78,000 ÷ 26 = $3,000. Federal annual taxable income becomes $48,000 after the coded $30,000 standard deduction.

The calculator produces about $203.19 of federal income tax, $141.19 of Virginia income tax, $186.00 of Social Security tax, and $43.50 of Medicare tax. Total taxes are $573.88. Estimated net pay is therefore $3,000.00 − $573.88 = $2,426.12 per paycheck. The projected monthly take-home amount is $5,256.59, and projected annual take-home pay is $63,079.12.

How to Use the Virginia Salary Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Enter your Annual Gross Salary. The calculator requires an annual salary greater than zero.
  2. Select Weekly, Biweekly, Semimonthly, or Monthly pay frequency. Biweekly, or 26 pay periods per year, is the default.
  3. Choose your Federal Filing Status. Then enter any applicable W-4 Step 2, Step 3, Step 4(a), Step 4(b), or Step 4(c) information.
  4. Enter your Virginia personal and dependent exemptions, additional age or blindness exemptions, and any extra Virginia withholding per paycheck.
  5. Add applicable pre-tax deductions. Available fields include traditional 401(k)/403(b), Section 125 health insurance, HSA/FSA contributions, and other pre-tax deductions.
  6. Add Roth retirement or other post-tax deductions if they apply to the paycheck.
  7. If needed, enter prior year-to-date Social Security, Medicare, and supplemental wages. You can also enter current supplemental wages and choose the combined or separate flat method.
  8. Leave the Local Tax Rate at its default 0% unless you intentionally want to apply a manual local tax estimate.
  9. Check the acknowledgement that the result is an estimate, then select Calculate.

The result shows estimated net pay for the current period plus a detailed breakdown of gross pay, taxable wages, taxes, deductions, and take-home pay. Monthly and annual figures are projections that assume the calculated paycheck repeats for every pay period.

What Can Affect Your Virginia Paycheck Estimate?

Pre-Tax Deductions Do Not All Work the Same Way

The code treats each pre-tax deduction differently. Traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contributions reduce federal and Virginia taxable wages, but they do not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages. Section 125 health insurance and HSA/FSA amounts reduce federal, Virginia, Social Security, and Medicare taxable wages. The Other Pre-Tax field reduces federal taxable wages only.

Bonuses and Supplemental Wages

Supplemental wages can be processed by the combined method or the separate flat method. Under the coded flat method, federal supplemental withholding is 22% up to the remaining portion of the $1 million supplemental wage threshold and 37% above it. Virginia supplemental withholding is 5.75%. Prior year-to-date supplemental wages determine how much room remains below $1 million.

Year-to-Date Wages Matter for Payroll Taxes

Prior Social Security wages are used to determine how much of the current paycheck remains subject to the $176,100 Social Security wage base. Prior Medicare wages are used when calculating Additional Medicare withholding above $200,000. Leaving these fields at zero can change the estimate for workers who are already far into the tax year.

Virginia-Specific Limits in This Calculator

The calculator hardcodes state employee payroll program deductions at $0.00 for tax year 2025. Its own calculation notes state that Virginia has no employee-paid disability, family leave, or unemployment contributions for 2025. The local tax field also defaults to 0% because the calculator states that Virginia imposes no local income tax on wages. Any nonzero local rate is only a manual estimate.

This tool uses 2025 tax settings and was coded as an estimate. It should not be treated as payroll, tax, legal, or accounting advice. Actual results can vary because of employer payroll systems, certified wage data, permitted withholding methods, tax changes, or information outside the calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Virginia salary calculator?

The Virginia salary calculator provides an estimate based on the 2025 federal and Virginia rules coded into the tool. It includes federal withholding, Virginia withholding, Social Security, Medicare, supported deductions, and optional supplemental pay. Actual payroll may differ because employers can use payroll data or permitted methods that are not represented here.

How do I calculate take-home pay in Virginia?

Enter your annual gross salary and pay frequency, then provide the tax and deduction information that applies to your paycheck. The calculator determines gross pay for the period, calculates the supported federal and Virginia taxes, subtracts deductions, and displays estimated net pay along with projected monthly and annual take-home amounts.

Does this Virginia paycheck calculator include federal taxes?

Yes. The calculator estimates federal income tax using the coded 2025 filing-status deductions and progressive tax brackets. It also supports W-4 Step 2, dependent credits in Step 3, other income in Step 4(a), deductions in Step 4(b), and extra federal withholding per paycheck in Step 4(c).

Does the calculator include Social Security and Medicare?

Yes. Social Security is calculated at 6.2% up to the coded $176,100 wage base, taking prior year-to-date Social Security wages into account. Medicare is calculated at 1.45%. The calculator also applies 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding when combined prior and current Medicare wages exceed the coded $200,000 threshold.

How are bonuses taxed in this Virginia salary calculator?

The calculator treats entered bonuses or commissions as supplemental wages. With the combined method, it calculates the extra tax caused by adding supplemental wages to regular taxable pay. With the flat method, federal withholding is 22% or 37% depending on the $1 million threshold, while Virginia withholding is 5.75%.

Does Virginia have a local income tax in this calculator?

The calculator defaults the local tax rate to 0% and states that Virginia imposes no local income tax on wages. It still provides a manual Local Tax Rate field from 0% to 100%. If you enter a rate, the calculator applies that percentage to total gross pay as an estimated local tax.

Why does my 401(k) contribution not reduce Social Security tax?

That behavior comes directly from the calculator’s deduction rules. A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) amount reduces the federal and Virginia taxable wages used by this tool, but it does not reduce Social Security or Medicare taxable wages. Section 125 health insurance and HSA/FSA entries reduce all four taxable wage categories.
