Maine Salary Calculator

2026 employee withholding estimate using Maine’s revised August 2026 withholding method

Salary & Pay Frequency

Annual gross salary before taxes and employee deductions.

Federal W-4 Settings

Affects federal withholding only. Maine instructs employers not to reduce Maine withholding for federal Step 4(b).

Maine Form W-4ME Settings

Maine Revenue Services revised the 2026 withholding tables in August 2026. The revised percentage method uses a $5,300 allowance value, updated withholding standard deductions, and a 2% high-income withholding surcharge. Maine still uses Single and Married withholding schedules.
Each 2026 Maine withholding allowance is $5,300 annually. If no valid W-4ME is on file, use Single with 0 allowances.
Use only when a valid W-4ME exemption applies. This single checkbox does not apportion a paycheck between exempt tribal-land wages and nonexempt wages.

Deductions

Reduces federal and Maine income-tax withholding wages; generally does not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages.
Assumes qualified Section 125 treatment that reduces federal, FICA, Maine withholding, and PFML reportable wages.
Assumes a qualifying Section 125 salary-reduction contribution.

Year-to-Date & Supplemental Options

Used to stop PFML premiums when covered wages reach the 2026 Social Security wage cap of $184,500.
Maine permits a flat 5% withholding rate for separately paid supplemental wages.
Enter the actual employee deduction rate, from 0% through 0.50%. Default is 0 because the amount passed to employees is employer-dependent. PFML premiums are withheld after federal and state taxes.

Local Tax Estimate

Manual simplified estimate only. No general Maine municipal wage-income withholding system is automatically assumed or detected. Leave at 0 unless a separately verified payroll-related local charge applies.
Estimates only. Withholding may differ from final tax liability and employer payroll treatment. This calculator does not determine Maine residency, nonresident workday thresholds, tribal-land wage apportionment, military-spouse eligibility, PFML private-plan treatment, employee classification, or local jurisdiction. Not tax, legal, payroll, or accounting advice.

What Is the Maine Salary Calculator?

The Maine Salary Calculator is a paycheck estimator that converts annual salary into regular gross pay for weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly payroll. It then applies the calculator's built-in 2026 federal withholding logic, Maine's revised August 2026 withholding method, FICA taxes, selected deductions, and optional supplemental-pay rules.

A Maine salary calculator estimates what may remain from each paycheck after modeled taxes, payroll programs, and deductions. Enter your annual salary, pay frequency, tax settings, deductions, and relevant year-to-date wages. The tool returns estimated net pay, taxable wages, individual tax amounts, and monthly and annual take-home projections based on the current paycheck assumptions.

It is most useful for employees who want to understand how withholding choices, pre-tax benefits, bonuses, or wage caps can change a paycheck estimate. It does not calculate a final tax return or determine whether a special Maine tax or payroll rule applies to your situation.

How the 2026 Maine Salary Calculator Formula Works

The calculation starts by dividing annual salary by the selected number of pay periods: 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semimonthly, or 12 monthly.

R=SPR = \frac{S}{P}

Here, R is regular gross pay, S is annual salary, and P is pay periods per year.

Wincome=max⁡(0,R−K−H−A)W_{income}=\max(0,R-K-H-A)

For regular federal and Maine income-tax wages, the code subtracts traditional 401(k) contributions (K), Section 125 health premiums (H), and Section 125 HSA payroll contributions (A). Supplemental wages are added afterward. For Social Security and Medicare, the 401(k) is not subtracted; only the health and HSA amounts reduce FICA wages.

SS=0.062×min⁡(WFICA,max⁡(0,184500−YTDSS))SS=0.062\times\min\left(W_{FICA},\max(0,184500-YTD_{SS})\right)

Medicare is 1.45% of FICA wages. Additional Medicare is 0.9% only on current wages that cross the code's $200,000 year-to-date Medicare threshold. Social Security and Maine PFML premium wages stop at the modeled 2026 wage cap of $184,500.

IME=max⁡(0,AME−5300n−Dstd)I_{ME}=\max(0,A_{ME}-5300n-D_{std})

Maine annualized withholding income subtracts $5,300 per whole W-4ME allowance and a status-based standard deduction. The maximum is $12,850 for Single and $28,550 for Married, phased down at higher annualized wages. The balance uses the coded 5.8%, 6.75%, and 7.15% brackets, plus 2% above $1,000,000 for Single or $1,500,000 for Married. The per-period amount is rounded to the nearest whole dollar before W-4ME additional withholding.

Federal regular withholding annualizes regular taxable wages, adds W-4 Step 4(a) other income, subtracts Step 4(b) deductions and the coded filing-status adjustment, applies the built-in progressive table, subtracts Step 3 credits, divides by pay periods, and adds Step 4(c) extra withholding. If W-4 Step 2 is checked, the calculator uses its Step 2 table and removes the adjustment.

Example: with a $78,000 salary paid biweekly, Single federal status, Single Maine status, one Maine allowance, no supplemental pay, no deductions, no extra withholding, and zero year-to-date wages, regular gross pay is $3,000. Federal withholding is about $320.38, Social Security is $186.00, Medicare is $43.50, and Maine withholding is $145.00. Estimated net pay is $2,305.12. The projected monthly take-home pay is $4,994.42 and the annual projection is $59,933.00.

How to Use the Maine Salary Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Enter your annual gross salary and choose weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly pay frequency.
  2. Choose your federal filing status. Then enter any W-4 Step 2, Step 3, Step 4(a), Step 4(b), or Step 4(c) information that applies.
  3. Select your Maine W-4ME withholding status. Enter Line 4 allowances and any Line 5 additional withholding, or check the Maine exemption box only when a valid exemption applies to all modeled wages.
  4. Enter per-paycheck deductions for a traditional 401(k), Section 125 health insurance, Section 125 HSA payroll contributions, Roth retirement, and other post-tax deductions.
  5. Add prior year-to-date Social Security, Medicare, Maine PFML, and federal supplemental wages when relevant. Enter current supplemental wages and choose the federal and Maine supplemental wage methods.
  6. Enter the actual Maine PFML employee rate, up to 0.50%, if applicable. Add a manual local tax rate only if separately verified.
  7. Select Calculate to view estimated net pay, gross pay, taxable wages, each modeled tax or payroll deduction, and projected monthly and annual take-home pay.

The main result is estimated net pay for the current paycheck. The monthly and annual figures simply repeat the current paycheck assumptions across the selected pay frequency. They are projections, not a year-to-date payroll reconciliation or a forecast of your final tax liability.

What Your Maine Salary Calculator Result Means

The calculator separates gross pay, taxable wage bases, taxes, and deductions so you can see why net pay differs from salary divided by pay periods. An important detail is that deductions reduce different wage bases.

Supplemental pay can follow different withholding logic

For federal supplemental wages, the calculator can use an aggregate method or a separate-payment method. When the separate method is selected and optional flat-rate eligibility is checked, it applies 22% to the portion below the remaining $1 million supplemental-wage threshold and 37% above it. Otherwise, the normal portion is handled through the aggregate regular-withholding calculation. For separately paid Maine supplemental wages, the tool can add 5% withholding.

Year-to-date wages affect some payroll taxes

Prior Social Security wages reduce the amount of current wages still subject to the $184,500 Social Security cap. Prior Medicare wages determine whether current wages cross the $200,000 Additional Medicare threshold. Prior Maine PFML wages similarly reduce the remaining modeled PFML wage base.

Input checks built into the tool

The calculator requires an annual salary above $0, nonnegative values, whole-number Maine allowances, a PFML rate no higher than 0.50%, and a local rate no higher than 100%. It also stops if deductions exceed gross pay or if taxes, withholding, and deductions would make net pay negative.

Know the limits of the estimate

This calculator estimates withholding from the inputs and rules coded into the tool. Actual payroll and final tax liability can differ because of employer treatment, tax filing details, laws, payroll timing, benefits, and facts not modeled here. The tool does not determine Maine residency, nonresident workday thresholds, tribal-land wage apportionment, military-spouse eligibility, PFML private-plan treatment, employee classification, or local jurisdiction. It is not tax, legal, payroll, or accounting advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Maine salary calculator?

The calculator is an estimate based on the exact 2026 withholding rules and inputs built into the code. It can closely model the selected paycheck scenario, but actual payroll may differ because of employer practices, benefit treatment, tax details, or facts the tool does not collect. It does not calculate final tax liability.

How does a traditional 401(k) affect the calculation?

A traditional 401(k) contribution reduces regular federal and Maine income-tax withholding wages in this calculator. It does not reduce Social Security, Medicare, or Maine PFML wage bases. The contribution is also subtracted from gross pay when the tool calculates estimated net pay for the current paycheck.

Does the calculator include Maine PFML?

Yes, but the Maine PFML employee rate defaults to 0%. You must enter the actual employee deduction rate, up to 0.50%, when applicable. The calculator applies that rate to modeled PFML wages after Section 125 health and HSA reductions, subject to the remaining $184,500 wage cap based on prior year-to-date PFML wages.

How are bonuses or supplemental wages handled?

Current supplemental wages are added to the paycheck and can use different federal and Maine methods. Federal options include aggregate treatment or, when eligibility is checked, a separate 22% method below the remaining $1 million threshold and 37% above it. Maine can combine the payment or use an optional 5% separate-payment method.

What pay frequencies does the Maine salary calculator support?

The calculator supports weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly payroll. Those choices correspond to 52, 26, 24, and 12 pay periods per year. The selected frequency determines regular gross pay from annual salary and is also used when annualizing withholding and projecting monthly and annual take-home pay.

Why can Maine withholding differ from my final Maine income tax?

Maine paycheck withholding is only a prepayment estimate, not the final tax calculation. This tool uses the coded W-4ME allowance, standard-deduction phaseout, withholding brackets, surcharge, exemption, and additional-withholding rules. Your final Maine tax can differ because a tax return may include income, credits, deductions, residency facts, or other items not modeled here.

What happens after I reach the Social Security wage cap?

The calculator uses prior year-to-date Social Security wages to find the remaining portion of the $184,500 modeled 2026 wage cap. Only current FICA wages up to that remaining amount receive the 6.2% Social Security tax. Medicare still applies to FICA wages, with Additional Medicare calculated separately when the $200,000 threshold is crossed.
