Your Bonus Estimate
- Bonuses are not taxed at a special bonus rate when you file. They are ordinary income taxed at your regular marginal rate.
- The 22 percent federal flat rate is simply a withholding method employers use on supplemental wages paid separately. It is not a tax rate.
- New York permits a flat 11.7 percent withholding rate for separately paid bonuses. This is different from the regular graduated brackets (4 percent to 10.9 percent).
- The aggregate method combines your bonus with regular wages and applies your Form IT-2104 allowances. The bonus portion equals the difference between combined withholding and regular-only withholding.
- New York City and Yonkers levy additional local income taxes. NYC residents pay 3.078% to 3.876%, and Yonkers has its own tax rates.
- When you file your return, your total annual income determines your true liability. Over-withholding on the bonus becomes part of your refund. Under-withholding becomes tax due.
- Gross-up mode solves for the gross bonus your employer must pay so your take-home equals the target you enter.
What Is the New York Bonus Calculator?
The New York Bonus Calculator is a payroll withholding estimator designed to calculate the expected take-home amount from a bonus. It uses 2025 federal and New York tax settings coded into the tool. It also accounts for Social Security, Medicare, optional New York City tax, and optional Yonkers tax.
The New York bonus calculator subtracts estimated federal, state, payroll, and entered local withholding from your gross bonus to estimate your net bonus. You can choose flat or aggregate federal and New York withholding methods. Gross-up mode works in reverse by estimating the gross bonus needed to reach a target take-home amount.
The tool is useful for New York employees who want to understand a bonus paycheck before it is paid. Results include bonus take-home pay, the effective withholding rate, a tax breakdown, a full pay-period estimate, and an annual snapshot based on the information entered.
How the New York Bonus Calculator Formula Works
The calculator begins with the gross bonus and subtracts each withholding amount assigned to that bonus. The main net bonus calculation is:
In this formula, B is the gross bonus. FB is federal income tax withholding. SSB is Social Security. MB is Medicare. AMB is Additional Medicare withholding. NYB is New York State withholding. NYCB and YONB are the optional local amounts.
Under the flat federal method, the code applies 22% while cumulative supplemental wages remain below $1,000,000. Any portion above that threshold is withheld at 37%.
The flat New York method applies 11.7% to the bonus:
For either aggregate method, the calculator adds the bonus to regular taxable wages. It calculates withholding on the combined check, then subtracts the regular-only withholding. New York aggregate withholding uses the selected New York filing status, its coded standard deduction, and Form IT-2104 allowances worth $1,000 each.
Social Security is 6.2% until the coded 2025 wage base of $176,100 is reached. Medicare is 1.45%. Additional Medicare withholding is 0.9% on wages above the calculator's $200,000 threshold. Entered NYC and Yonkers percentages are converted to decimal rates and applied directly to taxable wages and the bonus.
Worked Example
Assume a $5,000 bonus uses the flat federal and flat New York methods. Also assume no NYC or Yonkers rate is entered, prior Social Security wages are below the wage base, and the Additional Medicare threshold has not been reached.
- Federal withholding: $5,000 × 22% = $1,100.00
- New York withholding: $5,000 × 11.7% = $585.00
- Social Security: $5,000 × 6.2% = $310.00
- Medicare: $5,000 × 1.45% = $72.50
- Additional Medicare withholding: $0.00 in this example
- Total bonus withholding: $2,067.50
- Estimated bonus take-home: $5,000 − $2,067.50 = $2,932.50
The effective withholding rate is 41.35% in this example. Entering an NYC or Yonkers rate would increase withholding. Aggregate methods, year-to-date wages, and other payroll settings can also change the result.

What Your New York Bonus Calculator Result Means
Flat Versus Aggregate Withholding
The tool calculates your selected federal and New York methods and also displays the result under the alternative method. Flat withholding uses the coded supplemental percentage. Aggregate withholding combines your regular taxable wages with the bonus and measures the increase in calculated withholding caused by the bonus.
| Calculator Setting | How the Code Handles It |
|---|---|
| Federal flat method | 22% below the remaining $1,000,000 supplemental-wage threshold and 37% above it |
| Federal aggregate method | Combined federal withholding minus regular-only withholding |
| New York flat method | 11.7% of the bonus |
| New York aggregate method | Combined state withholding minus regular-only withholding |
| NYC rate | User-entered percentage applied directly to applicable wages |
| Yonkers rate | User-entered percentage applied directly to applicable wages |
How Deductions Affect the Estimate
Pre-tax deductions are entered per regular paycheck. The calculator subtracts them from regular federal and New York taxable wages. It does not subtract them from Social Security or Medicare wages. Post-tax deductions reduce estimated take-home pay but do not reduce the taxes calculated by the tool.
If a pre-tax or post-tax deduction exceeds regular gross pay for the period, the code limits that deduction to regular gross pay. New York allowances are also converted to whole numbers before use, with each allowance reducing annualized New York taxable wages by $1,000.
Why Year-to-Date Data Matters
Prior Social Security wages determine how much of the $176,100 wage base remains. Prior Medicare wages affect Additional Medicare withholding. Prior federal supplemental wages determine whether some of the current bonus moves above the $1,000,000 threshold. Pay periods already received and prior withholding also affect the annual projection.
Important Limitation of the Annual Projection
The annual snapshot displays estimated NYC and Yonkers tax when you enter local rates. However, the calculator's projected annual income-tax withholding and projected refund or amount due use only federal and New York State withholding and liability. The filing projection does not include NYC or Yonkers amounts in that final comparison.
All results are estimates based on the calculator's coded 2025 rules and your entries. Actual payroll withholding or final tax liability may differ because of employer payroll methods, other income, deductions, credits, later bonuses, tax-law changes, and other facts not modeled here. The calculator does not provide tax, payroll, or legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a bonus taxed in New York?
This calculator treats a bonus as ordinary income while separately estimating payroll withholding. Its flat New York bonus option withholds 11.7%. The aggregate option combines the bonus with regular taxable wages and calculates the bonus withholding as the difference between combined New York withholding and regular-only withholding.
What is the New York bonus withholding rate?
The calculator uses 11.7% for its flat New York supplemental withholding option. This rate applies to the gross bonus within the calculator when the flat state method is selected. The tool also offers an aggregate method, so the calculated state withholding can differ depending on the method you choose.
What is the difference between flat and aggregate bonus withholding?
Flat withholding multiplies the bonus by a specified supplemental rate, while aggregate withholding combines the bonus with regular taxable wages. The calculator then subtracts regular-only withholding from combined withholding. It provides both methods for federal and New York State calculations and shows the alternative result for comparison.
Does the New York bonus calculator include NYC tax?
Yes, but the NYC percentage is entered manually. The calculator converts the percentage you enter into a decimal rate and applies it to regular state-taxable wages and the gross bonus. Enter zero if NYC tax does not apply. The tool does not automatically select a NYC rate for you.
Does the calculator include Yonkers tax?
Yes. You can enter a Yonkers tax percentage, and the calculator applies that rate to regular state-taxable wages and the bonus. Enter zero if Yonkers tax does not apply. Like the NYC field, the calculator does not automatically determine which Yonkers percentage applies to your situation.
How does gross-up mode calculate a required bonus?
Gross-up mode starts with the take-home amount you want. The calculator repeatedly tests gross bonus values until it finds an amount that produces at least the target net amount under the selected settings. It then rounds the required gross bonus upward to the next cent before displaying the result.
How accurate is the New York Bonus Calculator?
The calculator provides an estimate based on its coded 2025 federal and New York rules. Accuracy depends on the information you enter, especially salary, withholding methods, local rates, deductions, and year-to-date wages. Actual employer withholding and final tax liability can differ because the tool cannot model every payroll or tax situation.
