Tennessee has no state income tax on wages or bonuses. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed effective January 1, 2021, and the Tennessee constitution (Amendment 3, 2014) prohibits any state or local tax on payroll or earned personal income. Tennessee also mandates no employee-paid paid family leave payroll program. Your bonus is subject only to federal income tax and FICA taxes.

Prior YTD supplemental wages determine whether this bonus crosses the $1,000,000 federal supplemental threshold (37 percent above it). Periods and withholding already received are used to project your refund or balance due at filing. Tennessee imposes no state withholding, so no state year-to-date fields are required.
Withholding is not the final tax on your bonus.
  • Bonuses are not taxed at a special bonus rate when you file. They are ordinary income taxed at your regular marginal rate.
  • The 22 percent federal flat rate is simply a withholding method employers use on supplemental wages paid separately. It is not a tax rate.
  • Tennessee has no state income tax on wages or bonuses, so your bonus is subject only to federal income tax and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare).
  • The aggregate method combines your bonus with regular wages and applies your W-4 deductions. The bonus portion equals the difference between combined withholding and regular-only withholding.
  • Tennessee municipalities and counties cannot impose local income taxes on earned income because the state constitution prohibits them.
  • When you file your return, your total annual income determines your true federal liability. Over-withholding on the bonus becomes part of your refund. Under-withholding becomes tax due.
  • Gross-up mode solves for the gross bonus your employer must pay so your take-home equals the target you enter.
Estimates only. Based on 2025 federal tax rules. Tennessee imposes no state income tax on wages. Not tax, payroll, or legal advice.

What Is the Tennessee Bonus Calculator?

The Tennessee Bonus Calculator is a payroll withholding estimator for employees receiving bonus pay. It calculates an estimated net bonus after federal income tax withholding and FICA taxes. FICA includes Social Security and Medicare. The calculator also accounts for Additional Medicare withholding when its programmed wage threshold is reached.

A Tennessee bonus calculator estimates how much of your gross bonus may remain after federal withholding and payroll taxes. Enter your bonus, salary, pay frequency, filing status, W-4 information, deductions, and optional year-to-date payroll data. The tool then shows your estimated bonus take-home and effective withholding rate.

The calculator can also solve backward from a desired take-home amount. Its results include a bonus withholding breakdown, full pay-period estimate, federal withholding method comparison, annual federal tax estimate, and projected federal refund or amount due.

How the Tennessee Bonus Calculator Formula Works

The calculator determines bonus take-home by subtracting the withholding assigned to the bonus. Tennessee state income tax is always zero in the calculation, so only federal income tax and federal payroll taxes reduce the bonus.

N=B(F+SS+M+AM)N=B-(F+SS+M+AM)
  • N is the estimated bonus take-home amount.
  • B is the gross bonus.
  • F is federal income tax withheld from the bonus.
  • SS is Social Security withholding assigned to the bonus.
  • M is Medicare withholding on the bonus.
  • AM is Additional Medicare withholding on the bonus.

With the flat federal method, the calculator applies 22% to supplemental wages below the remaining $1,000,000 cumulative threshold. It uses prior year-to-date federal supplemental wages when finding that remaining amount. Any part of the current bonus above the threshold is withheld at 37%.

Fflat=0.22B22+0.37B37F_{flat}=0.22B_{22}+0.37B_{37}

The aggregate method adds the bonus to regular taxable wages for one paycheck. The calculator annualizes that amount, applies its programmed filing-status deduction, tax brackets, and W-4 adjustments, then subtracts the withholding calculated on regular wages alone.

Fbonus=FcombinedFregularF_{bonus}=F_{combined}-F_{regular}

Example: Assume a $5,000 gross bonus, a $75,000 annual salary, biweekly pay, married filing jointly status, the flat federal method, no deductions, and no prior year-to-date wages. Federal bonus withholding is $1,100. Social Security is $310. Medicare is $72.50. Additional Medicare is $0. Tennessee income tax is $0. Total bonus withholding is $1,482.50. The estimated bonus take-home is $3,517.50, and the effective withholding rate is 29.65%.

The code applies Social Security at 6.2% up to its $176,100 wage base. Medicare is 1.45%. Additional Medicare is 0.9% above the calculator's $200,000 wage threshold. Prior year-to-date wages can change how much of the current bonus is subject to these payroll taxes.

How to Use the Tennessee Bonus Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Choose the calculator mode. Use estimate mode if you know the gross bonus, or gross-up mode if you know the net amount you want.
  2. Enter the bonus amount. In gross-up mode, this field becomes the desired net bonus target. The entered amount must be greater than zero.
  3. Select the federal bonus withholding method. The calculator offers a flat 22% method and an aggregate method.
  4. Enter your base annual salary excluding the bonus. The salary can be zero or more.
  5. Select weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly pay frequency. Then choose single, married filing jointly, or head of household.
  6. Complete any applicable Federal W-4 fields. These include Step 2, dependent credits, other annual income, annual deductions, and extra federal withholding per check.
  7. Enter any pre-tax and post-tax deductions that apply to each regular paycheck.
  8. Add optional year-to-date Social Security wages, Medicare wages, federal supplemental wages, pay periods already received, and federal tax already withheld.
  9. Check the acknowledgment confirming that the result is a withholding estimate. Then calculate your bonus take-home or required gross bonus.

The first result shows your estimated bonus take-home after all calculated withholding. You will also see the effective withholding rate and each withholding component. Other results cover the full paycheck, alternative federal withholding method, estimated annual federal income tax, projected income tax withholding, and a projected federal refund or amount due.

Factors That Affect Your Tennessee Bonus Calculator Result

Tennessee Income Tax Is Always Zero in This Tool

The calculator does not deduct Tennessee state income tax from either regular wages or bonus wages. The code sets Tennessee state income tax to zero. It also shows estimated annual Tennessee income tax as $0.00. As a result, the filing projection compares projected federal withholding with estimated federal income tax liability.

Flat and Aggregate Withholding Can Produce Different Results

The flat method applies the programmed federal supplemental percentages directly to the bonus. The aggregate method uses your regular paycheck and bonus together. Because the combined paycheck is annualized before the calculator applies its federal brackets and W-4 settings, aggregate bonus withholding can be higher or lower than flat withholding.

The results also show what federal bonus withholding would be under the method you did not select. This is a comparison only. The calculator still uses your selected method to determine bonus take-home, total taxes, projected withholding, and the filing estimate.

W-4 Settings Change the Aggregate Calculation

The code uses annual standard deduction amounts of $15,000 for single, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for head of household. It then applies its programmed 2025 federal tax brackets. Step 3 dependent credits reduce calculated annual tax. Step 4(a) adds income, Step 4(b) subtracts deductions, and Step 4(c) adds extra withholding per paycheck.

If W-4 Step 2 is selected, this calculator adds $5,000 to annualized taxable wages. That fixed adjustment is part of the calculator's specific logic.

Year-to-Date Data Can Improve the Estimate

Prior Social Security wages determine how much of the $176,100 wage base remains. Prior Medicare wages affect the Additional Medicare calculation. Prior supplemental wages determine whether a bonus crosses the $1,000,000 federal supplemental threshold. Pay periods already received and federal withholding already paid also affect the projected annual withholding result.

Pre-tax deductions reduce regular wages used for federal income tax calculations in this tool. They do not reduce the Social Security or Medicare wages used by the code. Post-tax deductions reduce full-pay-period take-home only. Each deduction is capped internally at the regular gross pay for one paycheck.

The calculator accepts numeric inputs up to $1,000,000,000 and rejects negative amounts in fields that require zero or more. Optional blank numeric fields are treated as zero during the calculation. Pay periods already received are converted to a whole number.

These results are estimates only. The calculator is based on the 2025 federal tax settings written into its code. Actual payroll withholding and final federal tax can differ because of employer payroll procedures, other income, deductions, credits, tax-law changes, and personal circumstances not represented here. The output is not tax, payroll, financial, or legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tax is withheld from a bonus in Tennessee?

The amount depends on your federal withholding method and payroll data. Under the calculator's default flat method, it applies 22% federal supplemental withholding, 6.2% Social Security when applicable, 1.45% Medicare, and any applicable 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding. Tennessee state income tax is calculated as $0.00.

Does Tennessee tax bonuses?

The calculator applies no Tennessee state income tax to bonuses. Its code sets Tennessee state income tax to zero for bonus wages, regular wages, and the annual state tax estimate. Federal income tax and FICA withholding can still apply, so the tool does not treat a Tennessee bonus as free from all withholding.

What is the federal bonus withholding rate in this calculator?

The flat federal option uses 22% on supplemental wages below the remaining $1,000,000 cumulative threshold. If prior supplemental wages and the current bonus cross that threshold, the calculator applies 37% to the portion above it. It also offers an aggregate method based on the combined paycheck.

What is the difference between flat and aggregate bonus withholding?

The flat method applies supplemental withholding rates directly to the bonus. The aggregate method combines the bonus with regular taxable wages for one pay period. The calculator calculates withholding on that larger amount and subtracts regular-only withholding. It also displays the estimated bonus withholding under the other method for comparison.

Does the Tennessee Bonus Calculator include Social Security and Medicare?

Yes. The calculator includes 6.2% Social Security subject to its $176,100 wage base and 1.45% Medicare on wages. It also calculates 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding above its $200,000 threshold. Entering prior year-to-date Social Security and Medicare wages can change how these amounts are assigned to the bonus.

How do I gross up a bonus in Tennessee?

Select gross-up mode and enter the net bonus you want to receive. The calculator repeatedly tests gross bonus amounts until the estimated take-home reaches the target. It uses the same federal and payroll tax calculations as estimate mode, then rounds the required gross bonus upward to the nearest cent.

How accurate is the Tennessee Bonus Calculator?

The calculator provides an estimate based on your inputs and its programmed 2025 federal tax values. Relevant year-to-date data can improve calculations involving Social Security limits, Additional Medicare withholding, supplemental wage thresholds, and annual projections. Actual paycheck withholding or tax liability can differ from the displayed result.
