A Hockey Fenwick Calculator is a possession analysis tool that counts unblocked shot attempts. Fenwick For includes shots on goal and missed shots taken by the player’s team. Fenwick Against includes shots on goal and missed shots taken by the opposing team. Blocked shots are excluded.
The calculator shows what percentage of all unblocked attempts belonged to the player’s team while the player or team was on the ice. It also converts the raw totals into rates per 60 minutes. How the Fenwick Formula Works
The calculator first finds Fenwick For and Fenwick Against. These totals include shots on goal and missed shots. They do not include blocked attempts.
Fenwick percentage, shown as FF%, is the share of all unblocked attempts generated by the player’s team.

Worked Example
Assume a player or team records 120 shots on goal for, 45 missed shots for, 100 shots on goal against, and 50 missed shots against. Enter 60 minutes of ice time and an off-ice team Fenwick percentage of 0.500.
- Fenwick For equals 120 + 45, which gives 165.
- Fenwick Against equals 100 + 50, which gives 150.

If FF and FA are both zero, the calculator does not display results. If ice time is zero or blank, FF/60 and FA/60 display as 0.00. Blank numerical fields are treated as zero. The displayed percentage uses one decimal place, while rate statistics use two decimal places.
How to Use the Hockey Fenwick Calculator: Step by Step
- Enter Shots on Goal For. Use the number of 5-on-5 shots on goal produced by the player’s team during the selected sample.
- Enter Shots on Goal Against. This is the opposing team’s 5-on-5 shots on goal during the same sample.

Why Ice Time Matters
FF% does not use ice time because it compares attempt shares within the same sample. FF/60 and FA/60 do depend on ice time. A short sample can create very high rates because the calculator scales the entered totals to 60 minutes. Always confirm that the shot totals and ice time cover the same games, shifts, or reporting period.
Understanding Relative FF%
The relative result subtracts the off-ice decimal from the calculated on-ice decimal. The tool describes an absolute difference of at least five percentage points as massive. It describes a difference of at least two points as solid. Smaller differences are labeled negligible.
The current summary logic measures the absolute size of the relative difference. As written, it may use positive wording for a negative relative result whose magnitude is two percentage points or more. It also labels every difference below two points as negligible. Read the plus or minus sign before relying on the written summary.
Important Limitations
Fenwick measures unblocked attempt volume, not shot location, expected goals, shooting talent, score effects, competition, zone starts, or game state beyond the stated 5-on-5 sample.
