GPA Calculator

Course Name Credits Grade Course Type
Unweighted GPA 0.00
Weighted GPA 0.00
Total Credits Earned: 0
Scoring Standard: Calculation uses a 4.0 scale. Unweighted GPA ignores course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 points for Honors and 1.0 point for AP/IB/College courses to the standard grade point value.

What Is a GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a number that shows your academic performance.

Most schools use a 4.0 scale:

Letter GradeGrade Points
A+ / A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
F0.0

Each grade is converted into grade points. Then those points are averaged based on credit hours.

What Is a GPA Calculator?

A GPA calculator is a tool that:

  • Converts letter grades into grade points
  • Multiplies them by course credits
  • Adds everything together
  • Divides by total credits
  • Shows your final GPA

Instead of doing the math by hand, the calculator does it instantly and accurately.

The GPA calculator shown above includes:

  • Course name field
  • Credit input
  • Grade dropdown
  • Course type (Regular, Honors, AP/IB/College)
  • Automatic calculation of unweighted and weighted GPA
  • Total credits earned
  • Add and remove course options

It is built for flexibility and accuracy.

How to Calculate GPA (Step-by-Step)

Here is the simple formula used in the calculator:

Step 1: Convert Grades to Grade Points

Each letter grade has a numeric value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.).

Step 2: Multiply by Credits

Grade Points × Credit Hours = Total Points for that course

Example:
B (3.0) in a 3-credit course
3.0 × 3 = 9.0 points

Step 3: Add All Points

Add total points from all courses.

Step 4: Divide by Total Credits

Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits = GPA

That is your unweighted GPA.

What Is Unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA does not consider course difficulty.

It uses only the 4.0 scale.

An A in a regular class and an A in an AP class both count as 4.0.

Unweighted GPA shows pure academic performance without bonus weight.

What Is Weighted GPA?

Weighted GPA adds extra points for advanced courses.

In this calculator:

  • Honors courses add +0.5
  • AP / IB / College courses add +1.0
  • Regular courses add 0

Example:

If you earn an A (4.0) in an AP class:

4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 weighted grade points

This means your weighted GPA can go above 4.0.

Weighted GPA rewards students who take harder classes.

How to Use the GPA Calculator

Using the calculator is simple.

1. Enter Course Name

Type the name of the course (example: Math, Biology, English).

2. Enter Credits

Input the number of credit hours.
You can use decimals like 0.5 if needed.

3. Select Grade

Choose your letter grade from the dropdown menu.

4. Choose Course Type

Select:

  • Regular
  • Honors (+0.5)
  • AP/IB/College (+1.0)

5. Add More Courses

Click + Add Course to enter more classes.

6. Click Calculate GPA

The tool will show:

  • Unweighted GPA
  • Weighted GPA
  • Total Credits Earned

7. Reset If Needed

Click Reset to clear everything and start over.

The calculator ensures:

  • You cannot remove all course rows
  • GPA shows two decimal places
  • Invalid entries are ignored
  • You must enter at least one valid course

Example GPA Calculation

Let’s say you have:

  • Math: A (4.0), 1 credit, Regular
  • Science: A-, 1 credit, Honors
  • History: B+, 1 credit, Regular
  • English: A, 1 credit, AP

Unweighted GPA

(4.0 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 4.0) ÷ 4 = 3.75

Weighted GPA

Math: 4.0
Science: 3.7 + 0.5 = 4.2
History: 3.3
English: 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0

(4.0 + 4.2 + 3.3 + 5.0) ÷ 4 = 4.13

This shows how advanced courses increase your weighted GPA.

Why GPA Matters

Your GPA can affect:

  • College admissions
  • Scholarships
  • Academic honors
  • Financial aid
  • Internship opportunities
  • Graduate school applications

Even employers sometimes ask for GPA, especially for entry-level jobs.

Keeping track of your GPA helps you:

  • Set academic goals
  • See improvement over time
  • Understand where you need to improve
  • Plan future coursework

Common GPA Mistakes Students Make

  1. Forgetting to multiply by credits
  2. Ignoring course weight
  3. Using wrong grade values
  4. Mixing weighted and unweighted numbers
  5. Rounding too early

A GPA calculator prevents these errors.

Tips to Improve Your GPA

  • Focus on high-credit courses first
  • Retake low-grade classes if allowed
  • Take advanced courses if you can handle them
  • Meet with academic advisors
  • Build strong study habits

Small improvements in each class can raise your overall GPA.

Benefits of Using an Online GPA Calculator

  • Fast and accurate results
  • No manual math
  • Supports multiple courses
  • Calculates weighted and unweighted GPA
  • Easy to reset and reuse
  • Works for high school and college students

It saves time and reduces stress.
